Bravo Awards for 2001
General
A Bravo award is a statement of my personal recognition of
the work and attitudes of others. Here in Switzerland they are
typically called the Rose Awards.
The contrary of the Bravo Award is the BooHiss Award, also known
as the Cactus Awards here in Switzerland. This award is given
to those who I feel have done a major disservice during the
year.
In general, these awards will be directed toward contributions in
the Computer Industry, which is my main area of specialization.
However, given the fact that 2001 was probably the worst overall
year for the world since my birth, I will (hopefully exceptionally)
venture into politics in giving some awards.
Computing
The GNOME Team
Bravo to the GNOME team for bringing us the Gnome desktop for
Linux (and now being adopted by other vendors).
The Evolution Team
Bravo to the Evolution team at Ximian for bringing us this
marvelous software which duplicates and surpasses the functionality
of Microsoft Outlook. Fantastic. Thanks.
APC
Bravo to American Power Conversion Corporation for making such reliable
UPSes and for having excellent service. Thanks also for their
willingness to work with OpenSource developers.
