Bravo Awards for 2002
General
A Bravo award is a statement of my personal recognition of
the work and attitudes of others. Here in Switzerland they are
typically called the Rose Awards.
The contrary of the Bravo Award is the BooHiss Award, also known
as the Cactus Awards here in Switzerland. This award is given
to those who I feel have done a major disservice during the
year.
In general, these awards will be directed toward contributions in
the Computer Industry, which is my main area of specialization.
However, given the fact that 2002 was probably the worst overall
year for the world since my birth, I will (hopefully exceptionally)
venture into politics in giving some awards -- even worse than
2001.
Computing
General
For me, there was nothing really spectacular in computing
that occurred in 2002. GNOME evolved to 2.2, which promises
to be even better and simpler than what I'm using today. I'm
still using Evolution, but in version 1.1 and beyond, they
completely destroyed the pleasure of using it by reimplementing
the way it interacts with IMAP so that on my system, it is now
annoyingly slow -- almost to the point of being unusable as
a mail agent.
Politics
Jimmy Carter
Bravo to Jimmy Carter.
He was probably the least appreciated of all American
presidents, but he, in my view, is by far the most
humane, and has worked tirelessly to help the needy
of this world.
