You have probably heard about the Microsoft Tax. If not, consider the following. You purchase a computer (for example a Fujitsu) you want to use the computer as a Linux server. However, the computer comes with Microsoft Windows 98 preinstalled in French if you buy the computer here in Switzerland as I did. You then totally reformat the hard disk, install RedHat 6.0 and bring it up as a server. Nice, but do you know that you actually paid for the Microsoft Windows 98? One day, I decided, well I'll load this French version of Microsoft Windows 98 over the top of an old French version of Microsoft Windows 95 that I run as a laboratory machine. No go. The installation procedure tells me that it is only able to be loaded on an OEM machine. Thus, it seems that even though I paid for a license that I did not want and that I am not even able to use. :-(
